Boeing & Airbus Jumbo Jets at Miami International

I drove to Miami International on Saturday afternoon to see the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 jumbo jets. It was a very cloudy afternoon and there was a thunderstorm in the west that affected the landing of British Airways Flight BA207. It was too high on first approach so it flew over the airport headed south, west over Coral Gables, then north and each towards the runway. The first image was taken as the Boeing 747 flew over MIA because it was not low enough for landing.

Shooting Planes with Canon EF 100-400mm IS II Lens

For over 4 years the Canon 70-200mm lens was my lens of choice for airplane photos. The 100-200mm range was good enough for shots of the planes on the runway or close to the runway. However I realized I had to get a 400mm lens or greater to get those shots of planes approaching in the distance or flying overhead.

A few weeks ago I bought the Canon EF 100-400mm IS II lens. With a reach of 400mm I am now able to get the shots I see in magazines that I previously envied. I have been going to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) airport and the smaller Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) airport more often. Here are some of my better photos of planes in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami areas. I will be adding to the gallery periodically.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

Norwegian-DreamLiner-FLL_33909
Norwegian Air Shuttle flies from Oslo and London to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) 3 or 4 times each week. Flights NAX7031 and NAX7045 use the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. I shot this image of the Dreamliner as the Norwegian Airliner prepares to land at FLL on Tuesday June 23rd. Since I was pointing the camera into a scene with bright background I over-exposed the shot by 2/3 stop. I did add some brightness in post-processing which means I could have over-exposed the shot by 1 stop.

Photographing Planes from Airport Greenbelt Park in Dania Beach FL

Over twenty years ago, Broward County came up with a very innovative way to cut down on the airplane noise that the nearby residents heard. For years homeowners of the Melaleuca Gardens neighborhood, south of Griffin Road, complained about the noise from planes landing and taking off at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airpot (FLL).

Broward’s solution was to create a natural buffer instead of erecting concrete walls. This natural buffer is called Airport Greenbelt Park. “The milelong park on the southern edge of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is a series of 30-foot-tall mounds of trees and flowers and a lake…It is the first park in the country designed as a sound barrier.” (Sun-Sentinel)

Back in 1991 when the park opened to the public, visitors could watch small commercial and private planes like Cessnas and Falcons take off and land on the south runway. At the time the runway was not suited for larger jets from Airbus, Boeing and Embraer.

However, in September 2014 the expansion of the south runway was completed. On September 18 2014 JetBlue Flight 1028 became the first arrival on the new 8,000-foot runway. Plane enthusiasts and photographers can now get close-up views of Airbus A319, Airbus A320, Boeing 737, Embraer 175, Embraer 190 in addition to the smaller jets that used the runway prior to expansion.

I visit this park on average once per week. On December 23rd I shot this JetBlue Airbus A320 as it landed on the south runway.
