Shooting Planes with Canon EF 100-400mm IS II Lens

For over 4 years the Canon 70-200mm lens was my lens of choice for airplane photos. The 100-200mm range was good enough for shots of the planes on the runway or close to the runway. However I realized I had to get a 400mm lens or greater to get those shots of planes approaching in the distance or flying overhead.

A few weeks ago I bought the Canon EF 100-400mm IS II lens. With a reach of 400mm I am now able to get the shots I see in magazines that I previously envied. I have been going to the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) airport and the smaller Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) airport more often. Here are some of my better photos of planes in the Fort Lauderdale and Miami areas. I will be adding to the gallery periodically.

Second Outing with the New Canon 100-400mm IS II Lens

My second outing with the Canon 100-400mm IS II was better than the first. I decided to ignore the normal viewing areas at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. I parked in a lot near some trailers on the east side of the airport. From there I was able to get great shots of planes taking off. I was able to fill the frame at around 135mm and 200mm. Here are some of the images I took.

First Outing with the New Canon 100-400mm IS II Lens

I received the new Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 IS II lens on Thursday. I took a few photos in and around my backyard late that evening. On Saturday I took the lens to the airport for its first official outing. Here are some of the better images from Airport Greenbelt Park south of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International:

I usually have a lot more plane images to show after a trip to the airport. But this time the light was not great so not many “keepers.” However I will have some great shots next time out.

I Got My Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens today!

To say I am excited is an understatement. Today I received my long-awaited Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens from B&H Photo.

I have been using the trusted Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens for some time but admittedly I missed some great bird shots because 200mm was not enough. Now that I own the Canon 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens I am anxiously looking forward to visiting the local parks and nature centers to improve my chances of getting great bird photos.

I attached the lens to my Canon EOS 7D and went in my backyard to test the image stabilizer feature. This Northern Mockingbird is the first bird captured with the new lens. The image was captured late in the evening around 7:30. The camera and lens were handheld.

First impression: the camera focuses quickly. This is my first IS lens so it will take a little while for me to get comfortable with this feature and fully understand when to use Mode 1,2 and 3. A very good first impression.

Best lenses for canon 7D

QUESTION: “What are the best lenses for the canon 7D?” – Mike, Boston MA

ANSWER: According to Canon’s website the Canon EOS 7D is compatible with more than 60 Canon EF and EF-S lenses. These include these often used lenses:

Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens (Non-IS)

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM Lens

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Lens

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Lens

Canon make many fine lenses, so it’s fair to say the best lens for your Canon 7D is the lens that will get the job done. If you want to do landscape there are many lens to choose from. For example, some people like the EF 17-40mm f/4L USM for landscape and others prefer the 24-70mm f/2.8L USM. For portraiture some prefer a fixed lens like the 85mm f/1.8 EF USM Autofocus Lens while others like the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM zoom lens.

Before you select a lens for a particular job, find out what others are saying about that lens. Read the reviews at Amazon or B&H Photo or go to a Canon Forum like Photography-on-the.net.

Canon 7D with Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM lens

It has been said many times that the Canon EOS 7D needs high quality glass to take full advantage of its 18.0 Megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor. However the non-professional (amateur) photographer finds it hard to justify paying $2500 for theĀ EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens and other high quality L glass. But there is good news.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM lens is an inexpensive L glass that gives high quality images without burning a hole in your wallet/purse. I have owned the non-IS 70-200mm f/4L lens for about 3 years. In my opinion this lens gets me better images than my EF 24-70 f/2.8L lens.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM lens gives me unerring quality when I mount it on a tripod and use the self-timer on my Canon EOS 7D. When it is not convenient to use a tripod I often brace my camera against a firm support like a light post, a tree trunk or a wooden rail often found at the parks.

Here are 2 images taken with the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM lens. The image of the Green Heron was taken at Virginia Key Beach Park in Key Biscayne Florida and the image of the maple leaf was shot at Fern Forest Nature Center in Coconut Creek Florida.
